What's Next for our neighbourhoods?
Density, Design and Housing Policy After the Repeal
In the wake of City Council’s decision to repeal blanket R-CG upzoning, Calgary finds itself at a critical moment. With population projections pointing toward a city of 2 million people within the next decade, the challenge ahead is to deliver more housing, more diversity of housing types, and more predictable outcomes for both residents and builders. The issue is not whether we allow density — it’s whether we have a clear and predictable way to deliver it.
On May 6th, we bring together designers, developers, and city-builders who believe that Calgary can grow thoughtfully, with better policy, better design, and more constructive public dialogue that improves the quality, affordability and diversity of our housing supply. We’ll explore what we’ve learned from the R-CG process, where it fell short, and what a more effective path forward might look like.
The event will feature a short presentation, followed by a panel discussion featuring:
Alkarim Devani (MDDL) — the role of missing middle housing in addressing affordability
Kayla Browne (Bold Workshop Architecture) — designing gentle density in established neighbourhoods
Kate MacGregor (XYC Design + Development) — a proposed alternative land use framework linking density, design, and approvals
Chris Bell (Norfolk Housing) — the impact of downzoning on non-profit housing providers
- Denys Robinson (Moderator) — an introduction to a new coalition to implement change
We’ll close with an open networking session, creating space for attendees to connect, discuss, and get involved. This is not just a presentation: it’s an invitation to participate in shaping Calgary’s next chapter. Neighbourhoods and cities are not meant to be static, they evolve and grow over time. Right now, we have an opportunity to ensure that evolution is guided by clear policy, strong design, and a shared vision for a more affordable and inclusive city. Join us to be part of the conversation!
